Prices and payment
How much does a private tour cost?
Prices are per guide and cover the private guided experience itself. They are full prices, with no VAT added.
- Up to 2 hours: £185 per guide
- Half day, up to 4 hours: £250 per guide
- Full day, up to 8 hours: £420 per guide
Specialist and unusual Oxford experiences are priced as above, excluding entry costs.
What is included?
The private guide and the planning and delivery of your tour: the guided experience itself.
What costs extra?
Your price covers the guided walk itself. These are paid on top:
- College or attraction entry
- Punting
- Food and drink
- Transport
- Extra guides for larger groups
We can book college entry for you and add it to your booking, or you can pay on the day where that’s possible.
Do bank holidays or other languages cost more?
Tours on UK bank holidays cost £20 more per guide, and Christmas Day is double. Tours in a language other than English cost £10 more than the listed fee for up to two hours, £20 more for a half day and £30 more for a full day.
How do I pay?
Once your guide and tour are confirmed, we’ll send an invoice with a secure card payment link. It’s due 14 days before your walk, or straight away if you book closer than that.
What is your cancellation policy?
Our guides are freelance and hold your date for you, so there’s a charge if plans change. It’s in line with Guild of Registered Tourist Guides guidance, and if you’ve already paid, we’ll refund the difference.
- More than 7 days before: £50 per guide
- 7 days to 48 hours before: 50% of the fee
- Within 48 hours, or if you don’t show: the full fee
If we have to make a change, for example through illness, we’ll do our best to find a replacement guide. If we can’t, we’ll tell you as early as we can and either refund you in full or offer another date.
The full booking terms are in our terms and conditions.
Does a solo traveller pay the full £185?
Yes the price is inclusive of the fee for the guide
Can we change the date instead of cancelling?
Cancellations are in line with policy and date changes can be requested but are also subject to guide availability. With over 40 guides we are confident we can meet your requirements.
Should we tip the guide?
Tipping is encouraged if you’ve enjoyed the service and is payable directly to the guide on the day. Most guides are used to taking cash but we leave this up to personal discretion.
Booking
How do I book?
Use the form or call. A date, the number of people and a line about what you'd like to see is enough.
You'll get an accredited guide, a proposed route and the fee. Nothing is booked until you say yes.
How quickly will you reply?
Our lead guide will usually reply the same day with availability and an exact fee quote.
Who are the guides?
Over 40 guides, with specialisms from architecture to Inspector Morse, and tours in other languages on request. We match the guide to your group, not the other way round.
Can we book at short notice, for the same or the next day?
Dependent on guide availability and payment will be due once guide confirmed or due on the day.
Can we ask for a specific guide?
Dependent on availability but we will confirm or replace with another who has full confidence in the subject matter with your approval.
Do you arrange transport for day trips?
We can provide suggestions for transport for you to book directly.
On the day
Can we go inside the colleges?
Our price covers your guide only. College entry fees are extra. As colleges are private property and availability can change, we’ll recommend which to visit on the day, though you’re welcome to book individual colleges in advance via their own websites.
What if we are running late?
Guides are booked for the agreed time and may have another tour afterwards, so they might not be able to stay on. If you’re running late, let them know.
Can children come on a tour?
Children up to 17 must be accompanied by a supervising adult or teacher over 18, and we need advance notice of wheelchair users so we can plan an accessible route.
Where do we meet?
We can meet wherever you like. The most common meeting points are the Ashmolean Museum, the Martyrs’ Memorial and the train station. Coaches can drop off and pick up at the St Giles coach stop, the Oxford Playhouse on Beaumont Street and the Crown Court on St Aldates.
Can we visit Christ Church?
Tickets for Christ Church can be booked only around the week before and are subject to availability for groups of 13 or less. Otherwise these tickets have to be booked directly with the college, we will work your tours around your college booking.
Do tours run in bad weather?
Tour will run unless we are advised to cancel in which case a full refund is due. We naturally take cover intermittently in particularly stormy weather. The same is true for days with high temperatures.
Are there rest stops and accessible routes?
Rest stops are available throughout but please note there are very few public toilets in Oxford so it’s best to plan ahead before we start. Please let us know if you require an accessible route and we will do our best to accommodate with our knowledge of the medieval streets.
Can we take photos inside the colleges?
Photography inside colleges is permissible but look out for signage in some college chapels where it is not allowed.
Can we bring a dog?
Dogs are permissible in an Oxford walk but not inside sites such as colleges. Guide and service dogs are allowed but please let us know so we can confirm with the site and they can make any preparations needed.
Still have a question?
Ask us anything. Our lead guide will usually reply the same day.
